They come from early decisions: building orientation, deliberate placement of openings, shading, thermal mass, all determining how a room meets the external environment and what inner world this will form.

We are precise about how a building is put together, because construction is not separate from design.
Structure, material, proportion, openings and detail each carry part of the idea.
We prefer simple materials – brick, timber, stone, concrete and steel – and where appropriate we work with exposed surfaces to express a material’s true natural properties. These materials can be irregular, they change with age and they gather a patina; some need care which becomes part of the ritual of dwelling in place. These true materials give the eye and hand a tactile world of familiar textures to take in; they contain warmth and meaning.
